About Us

The National Association of Hungarian Journalists (MÚOSZ) is a public benefit social organization operating in the form of an association, performing professional, advocacy, educational and cultural activities. It is the longest standing media organization with the largest membership in Hungary, its predecessor, the Budapest Association of Journalists was founded in 1896 with the participation of Kálmán Mikszáth. The Association’s main purpose is to protect the freedom of the press, to support the legislative environment for journalistic activities and to promote employer culture.

In the 3500-strong membership of the Association  members of the press and the electronic media, broadly speaking all the representatives of the communication profession are present – organized into sections and rural clubs – including: journalists, editors, photographers, cartoonists, designers, spokesmen and pr-professionals. In 2010 our new headquarters opened in the 6th District on Vörösmarty Street: the renovated and rebuilt former Keglevich house, between Aradi and Szondi streets, it is not only home to the events of the media profession, but is also one of Budapest’s new training and cultural venues.

Anyone who has been working as a journalist as classified by the Statutes for at least two years can become a member of the organization, but young people interested in the media can also be admitted as junior members. Membership is assessed by a separate committee. Similar bodies work to protect the interests of journalists and press ethics.

The Association holds several press awards, the most prestigious recognition being the Golden Pen considered to be a lifetime achievement award, which is traditionally handed over at the Press Day gala ceremony. The Hungarian Press Photo Contest and Exhibition, which has a history of more than three decades, is the most influential event of the Association. The prize of the film and television critics section which has been awarded for 50 years is of comparable rank.

The Association pays special attention to supporting socially disadvantaged journalists through the Solidarity Foundation (Szolidaritás Alapítvány).

The largest Hungarian journalist organization operates its own website (muosz.hu). Quality-based education is realized within the framework of the Bálint György Journalist Academy.

The Association’s membership card is recognized in many parts of the world. There are many discount services available in Hungary and abroad with the ID card and the associated shopping card.

In 2008-2009, the organization renovated the journalists’ favourite holiday resort which has been frequented for decades in Tihany. The modern, elegant Balaton-shore building is the ideal place to relax and organize professional events.
