In recent years the toxic mixture of hate speech, fake news and “alternative facts” has increasingly been affecting the discourse in the online public sphere, and this phenomenon is posing a serious threat to democratic societies. So far debate and research on hateful content have mostly focused on potentially illegal statements. Deceitful narratives, however, reach far beyond the legal realm and the fight against misleading messages, often delivered in a sophisticated way requires complex approaches and creative solutions.

The goal of the roundtable is to explore how to deal with hateful content and share examples by different actors, such as representatives from academia, civil society and the media. The event is held as part of the multi-country project called Get the Trolls Out! https://www.getthetrollsout.org
